First Thursday on Main in July

Looks like many of our normal participants are taking time to be with family and friends and celebrate America! Come down to the Main Street District – Columbia, SC for drinks, dinner, and fun if you’re around!  Happy 4th to all of our FTOM friends!

Grapes & Gallery –  Complete your Independence Day celebration with Grapes & Gallery this Fourth of July! Thursday evening they will open their July Art Show for FTOM.

Their featured artists, Elizabeth McCaw and Gasper Bell are both Converse College students. McCaw is a senior Studio Art major earning a focus in Digital Media, Drawing, and Ceramics. Bell majors in Graphic Design, Photography, Printmaking, and Ceramics.

June’s First Thursday on Main features music from one end to the other end of Main Street with our friend’s at WXRY 99.3 FM!

Guess what? You can take the Free Soda Cap Connector during First Thursday! The Soda Cap Connector Route 3 will operate between Laurel @ Main and Segra Park between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to take passengers between destinations along Main Street for First Thursday on Main.

Columbia Museum of Art – Enjoy Free FTOM at the CMA!  Come experience an evening filled with art! Enjoy improv with The Mothers of Trustus Theatre at 6:30, a Focal Points: Proud Perspectives tour at 7:00, and a book signing with artist Sanford Greene, whose art is on view through June 23, from 6:00 – 8:00. Greene’s new comic book Bitter Root will be available for purchase as will signed prints.

Anastasia & Friends –  10 years ago – local artist Anastasia Chernoff had the idea, spirit, and energy to put an art gallery in the front of the unused Main Street office space occupied by The Free Times. Hundreds of artists have presented their work in the space and thousands have enjoyed it.  As all things change – so has the gallery that will close this summer. Grapes & Gallery – (1113 Taylor Street) – Enjoy the featured work of Captain Thomas O’Brien and Robert Keith IV. Both of these formally trained artists call Columbia home and enjoy using their work to illuminate unique perspectives on the world around them. Opening show will be on First Thursday on Main from 4 – 9 pm.

Mast General Store – Enjoy live music with Stillhouse ! They are an eclectic blending of styles and philosophies that is nothing less than stellar.  Each member brings unique talents and experiences. Five vocalists create intricate harmonies and arrangements that have been leaving audiences wide-eyed and amazed.  Stillhouse will be playing from 6-7:30.


Columbia Art Center (1227 Taylor Street) – Worlds of Creativity presents Venezuela a Hidden Paradise. Enjoy traditional Venezuelan dancing, singing accompanied by traditional acoustic instruments, life painting by Aura Ramirez, dance performances by Sincopao, food by Virginia Rodriguez, traditional dessert by Cristina Soto, and more!

1626 Main – Enjoy Dueling Pianos! Dueling Pianos with Jonathan Ansley and Greg Cloninger. The Rock And Roll Piano Show is a mobile, high-energy, singalong show, with lots of audience interaction. This event is free to the public! 8 -11 pm.

Lula Drake – Featuring live gypsy swing music with Les Flat Out Strangers.

Tapps Arts Center – Join Tapp’s for the inaugural presentation of JRenee Johnson’s project Beneath the Bottle Trees from 6 – 10 pm. This presentation will coincide with the ongoing exhibition, 24 Hours: (heart) Breaking News by the current Artist in Residence, Olga Yukhno. Tapp’s exhibitions are free to visit, and open to the public 10am to 6pm, Tuesday through Saturday.

The Joint –  Enjoy live music with the Mike Barber Blues Band.  The Joint’s Chef Daniela will be preparing fresh homemade fettuccine made in a piping hot hollowed out wheel of Parmesan cheese as it’s served in Italy and referred to as “Dalla Forma”. Yummy!!

Gallery at City Hall – Interested in why? Join us First Thursday,  after work for a photography talk at the Gallery at City Hall. Photographers will be lending their insights as to WHY they selected their one image for the show.
